Five Easy Ways '2 Broke Girls' Could Improve Itself (Step 1: Drop the Racist Character)

The biggest mystery of the fall season doesn't involve a detective or dead body; the suspects are, in this case, '2 Broke Girls.' Why doesn't the CBS sitcom do a much faster and more efficient job of fixing what's wrong with it? These problems are eminently fixable and they're getting in the way of what's working about the show.

'2 Broke Girls,' you may recall, was one of the best-reviewed pilots of the season, but since then, it's often found itself mired in a morass of cringe-inducing supporting characters, brain-numbing predictability and jokes that feel as though they were exhumed from dead sitcoms of the '80s. What gives? The show is doing well (it got a full-season order from CBS), but I can't escape the feeling that it'd be doing even better if it ditched its more groan-worthy elements.

Given the magical ability to fix '2 Broke Girls,' here's what I'd change right away:

1. Dump the racist caricature.

Art Directors To Honor ?Harry Potter? Creative Team

The Art Directors Guild said today it will bestow its honorary Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery Award to the creative team behind the Harry Potter films during the 16th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, set for February 4 at the Beverly Hilton. It’s the first time a movie franchise has been selected for the honor, which in the past has gone to Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood, Blake Edwards, Terry Gilliam, Ray Harryhausen, John Lasseter, George Lucas, Frank Oz, Steven Spielberg and Zhang Yimou among others. The Potter team includes producers David Heyman and David Barron, director David Yates, creator and author J.K. Rowling, screenwriter Steve Kloves, production designer Stuart Craig, art director Neil Lamont, and set decorator Stephenie McMillan. Nominations for the ADG Awards will be announced January 4.

According to a friend, Rob, 25, has agreed to keep his hair intact until the final installment of the movie franchise comes out ? but then he?s going to get a military style crewcut. ?Robert is a low-maintenance type of guy, but he has to spend a lot of time styling his hair,? the friend explains. ?He wants to be able to jump out of the shower and be ready in minutes, so that?s why he?s planning to cut his hair off after the movie debuts.?

A mystery trick or treater rang 'Rachael Ray''s (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) doorbell Monday, and a very tall Lady Gaga in drag was at the door. Rachael, wearing a Little Red Riding Hood costume, lifted the veil to reveal that it was Jerry Springer. The look was so bizarre that the audience didn't even realize it was Springer until Rachael and Buddy shouted his name.

Still in costume, Jerry sat down and talked about being on the air for 21 years. "Two names: Jerry and Oprah. That's the list that's gone over 20," Rachael marveled.
