Russell Simmons is, of course, a legend in the world of hip-hop, thanks to his role as co-founder of arguably the most influential record label of its era, Def Jam Recordings. Although he sold his stake of the label he founded to Universal back in the late nineties, he has gone on to even greater heights as a philanthropist and CEO of Rush Communications. We grabbed a few minutes with the media mogul after his interview on Jump Start Live the other day, and he was cool enough to answer a few questions about his new book, Super Rich: A Guide To Having It All, the “cool s***” that comes out of his old buddy Rick Rubin’s mouth, and what he thinks of Kanye West’s new record.
“He’s very, very brilliant, one of the best artists we have in hip-hop,” Simmons said about Yeezy. But, “I wish he hadn’t apologized to [President George W. Bush] … I think what he said was an important statement, artists get to say what’s on their mind. And when they’re commercial artists, what’s on their mind really resonates with lots of people … These ideas are ones that are sometimes thought about but never said.”
