HFPA President Says Some of Ricky Gervais' Jokes 'Unacceptable'

Philip Berk, the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organization behind the Golden Globes) told The Hollywood Reporter that some of Ricky Gervais' Golden Globes jokes were "unacceptable." Meanwhile, Gervais said Monday, "Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great." "He definitely crossed the line," Berk told the Reporter of Gervais (who hosted the Globes both Sunday night and in 2010). "And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky." Berk said that though he usually previews the host's script before the show, that's "not how Ricky works," so he had no idea what Ricky would say. "When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected," Berk said. Gervais took acid-tonged aim at such superstars as Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Charlie Sheen, and more during Sunday's Golden Globes broadcast. "Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones," Berk told the Reporter. Meanwhile Gervais addressed comments that since he wasn't seen for much of the middle of the broadcast, he must have been fired. He responded in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, "I did every single introduction I was meant to. "There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humor)." Berk wouldn't comment to the Reporter on whether he would like Gervais back to host the show for a third year in 2012. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association told "The Insider" Monday, "We loved the show. It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking. When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material. Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far. The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best we've ever had and we were pleased."
