2011 SXSW Guide: Fitz & The Tantrums Pick Their Fave Acts

Fitz And The Tantrums are a seven-piece pop machine that sound like acombination of Motown and Kick-era INXS, minus guitar. Fronted by the charismaticMichael Fitzpatrick, who rightly shares a big chunk of the spotlight with singerNoelle Scaggs, you may have recently caught the band making the rounds oflate-night talk shows (Jimmy Kimmel, Conan) to support its new album, Pickin’ Upthe Pieces. We haven’t seen the band live (TheFoo Fighters hijacked their SXSW stage last night), but we hear they put on anamazing show. Here’s the video for “MoneyGrabber,” Fitz’ new single:

After the jump, Fitz himself gives his SXSW picks.

TV On The Radio

“I’ve never seen them live, but have always been inspired by the music they make.I love Tunde’s voice. Can’t wait to hear the new album!”
Oh Land

“I walked into a little club in Los Angeles and there were three girls dancing withminiature houses illuminated on their heads! Totally out-there progressivedance music. And, PS: She’s Gorgeous!”
Cee Lo

“Because now that he’s the Black Liberace you always wanna see what he’s gonna donext!”
There are a whopping 2,000 or so acts performing at South By Southwest in Austin this year. A few are household names (Duran Duran, Erykah Badu, The Strokes), some are respected indie veterans (Low, Hieroglyphics) and others feel like they’re about to be the next big thing. We’ve asked a diverse group of 2011 SXSW artists to name acts in the lineup they’d love to see. We’re hoping this ongoing series will serve as not just a guide to the fest, but also an interesting snapshot of today’s music scene.
