2011 SXSW Guide: Rain Phoenix Picks Her Fave Acts

Papercranes, a rock/folk act fronted by Rain Phoenix (yes, Joaquin’s sis), features a rotating crew of periodic collaborators and guests including Rain’s sisters Summer and Liberty, Vic Chesnutt and Flea. Papercranes opened for R.E.M. at SXSW in 2008, and return this year with Let’s Make Babies In the Woods, a sophomore album that shifts in tone from dark and angry to bittersweet. It was created in the wake of Rain’s divorce.

After the jump, Rain’s picks.

Sister Crayon

“I love this band! Paul from Manimal introduced me to their haunting music, and I am better for it. Terra’s vocal style and the overall vibe of the band is an emotional roller coaster I love to ride.”

Duran Duran

“Being a child of the 80’s I couldn’t be more excited to see them live at sxsw! Their music left an indelible impact on my early life and to know I can re-experience that at sxsw while enjoying their new material is really exciting.”

Luke Rathborne

“This young talented musician is not to be missed. We’ve collaborated in Gift Horse Project where I got to see first hand how he combines his love of music with his kindness towards other artists. Luke is the real deal. “
There are a whopping 2,000 or so acts performing at South By Southwest in Austin this year. A few are household names (Duran Duran, Erykah Badu, The Strokes), some are respected indie veterans (Low, Hieroglyphics) and others feel like they’re about to be the next big thing. We’ve asked a diverse group of 2011 SXSW artists to name acts in the lineup they’d love to see. We’re hoping this ongoing series will serve as not just a guide to the fest, but also an interesting snapshot of today’s music scene.
